The Unbelievable Beauty of Being Human (Workshop and Performance Opportunity)

  • Pullen Memorial Baptist Church, Poteat Chapel 1801 Hillsborough Street Raleigh, NC 27605 (map)

with InterPlay co-founder Phil Porter

Schedule

Workshop (includes a break for lunch): 9:30am – 4:30pm
Opportunity to participate in performance: 7:00 – 9:00pm

Along with its transformational qualities, InterPlay is an easy and accessible way for anyone to create, drawing on our own experience and story. We get to “make stuff” right in the moment, both individually and in groups. In this one-day workshop, The Unbelievable Beauty of Being Human, led by InterPlay Co-founder Phil Porter, we will explore the wonderful possibilities of using movement, story, sound, connection and stillness, using the many “forms” of InterPlay—the simple structures that underly the process of creating in the moment. InterPlay allows us all to use all of our own abilities and experiences, and even discover new possibilities. The day will culminate in the creation of an informal evening of performance where we will create for each other and for friends, family and community members who want to come along to witness what we have been up to.

The delight in all this will be to see how incredible each of us is and how beautiful we are together. Expect to pick up some new “tricks” as we pay attention to the craftiness of InterPlay. In InterPlay, we expand the boundaries of what we consider to be performance, whether we’re creating for one witness, a group of friends, or an “audience.” We focus on the delight of making things, with less need to feel pressured or nervous! Performance evenings have a lot of space for choice around individual participation. Although you will not be required to take part, you are strongly encouraged to do so, because having participated in the day, you will be an important part of the “group body.”

About Phil Porter

Phil Porter is one of the co-founders of InterPlay, along with his colleague of 40 years, Cynthia Winton-Henry. He is a teacher, performer, writer, designer, artist, and organizer. He and Cynthia also co-founded WING IT! Performance Ensemble in 1989, an Oakland, California improvisational group. He has written several books including Having It All: Body, Mind, Heart & Spirit Together Again at Last and The Slightly Mad Rantings of a Body Intellectual Part One. Phil believes that InterPlay can be a powerful tool to create communities of diversity, peace, and justice.

Phil trained as a textile artist and graphic designer at the University of California at Berkeley, where he also spent a great deal of time studying modern dance. He has designed costumes and liturgical garments, and has worked in a variety of artistic media. He is currently obsessed with polymer clay.

Phil has immersed himself in the process of telling improvised “big body stories” that often address grand social and political issues as well as the mundane details of daily life, turning them into a spirited melange of movement, story and sound.
